Galathea 3 on course

Dato 6.6.2006

Thanks to contributions from many Danish funds, enterprises and private individuals, together with a recent additional 20 million crowns from the financial committee of Denmark’s parliament, the Galathea 3 expedition can now proceed on a secure economic footing.

Financial assistance has enabled comprehensive rebuilding works to the former naval inspection vessel ‘Vædderen’ (The Ram’) to equip her as a modern research platform.  Most of the research projects have also secured the necessary support.

However some research groups still require the means to carry out their work in its full scope – and money is needed to ensure the findings of the expedition’s scientists are given full attention.

Hence efforts are still underway to raise funds, both in research circles and in the Danish Expedition Foundation, which has backed all the project teams in their efforts to find sponsors.  Its Chairman Søren Haslund-Christensen believes there is a strong chance of raising the remaining cash:

“We are thankful for the enormous amount of goodwill from the State, from funds, private individuals and companies over the past months.  It has been truly inspiring to witness the interest and positive feelings that the Galathea 3 project has awoken.  The fact that the expedition will contribute to furthering Danish research, as well as education of young people, has been a factor in pulling in a broad spectrum of supporters.  This is why we believe that there will be help available to meet the last few needs”.
