A deadline is reached

Competing proposals from over a hundred research teams have recently caused congestion in the Copenhagen offices of Denmark’s Expedition Foundation. The deadline for applications was 12.00 today.

Dato 2.11.2005

“Naturally we have not yet looked into the projects in depth,” said Morten Meldgaard, director of the Danish Expedition Foundation.  “These last few days have seen a mass of applications. We have been busy registering them so that they can be referred to the Research Council on Monday for quality rating.  But I can say that there is a very wide spectrum of subjects covering all stages of the voyage.”

“The majority are natural science subjects, some taking up problems which already concern Danes.  Climate change, environmental influence on the seas and movements of the seabed such as that which caused the tsunami in south east Asia in 2004 are just some examples.  We are particularly keen to show young people how research relates to each and every person, now and in the future.”

In the coming months the task will be to ensure that the best use is made of available space within the Galathea 3 project.  The foundation expects to be able to give the results of the application process before the end of the year.
